How heat pumps work

Lennox heat pumps work much like an air conditioner (AC) during warmer months. A Lennox heat pump removes warm air from within the home and carries it outside where it's dissipated.

As the weather cools, the process is reversed, with the heat pump extracting warm air from the outside and bringing it indoors.

In warmer regions, the heat pump is combined with an air handler that circulates the air throughout the home. While in colder regions, the pump is combined with a furnace that both circulates the air and provides additional heating when needed.

Energy efficiency

Lennox heat pumps are rated in two ways: seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) and heating seasonal performance factor (HSPF).

A SEER is an efficiency measurement that represents the cooling output of a unit divided by its energy input. The higher the SEER rating of a unit, the more efficient its heating pump is, which means the pump is less costly to run throughout the year.

In the U.S., a new heat pump air conditioner unit must have a SEER rating of 13 or above. The economical Merit series of heat pumps available from Lennox have a SEER of 13 to meet this mandatory level. Lennox does provide a variety of units with SEER ratings as high as 19.2.

The HSPF rating measures the heating efficiency of the units. Like the SEER, the higher the HSPF rating, the more efficient and less costly the unit is to run. Newly manufactured pumps must have a HSPF rating of 7.7. This rating is required by law.

All Lennox heat pumps have an HSPF rating of 7.7 or higher. Some pumps have ratings as high as 9.7 out of a rating range of 10.

Pricing and installation

While higher efficiency ratings for heat pump air conditioning units directly result in lowered heating and cooling bills, the cost of highly efficient heat pumps can be significantly higher than their lower-rated counterparts.

In addition, the Lennox heat pump is only a part of the HVAC system. When you install air ducting, a furnace or an air handler, the total cost can rise. Because of this, it's important to decide just how efficient a system you need to provide the heating and home cooling that you desire.

Get an installation estimate from area contractors for various Lennox heat pumps before making a final installation decision. The contractor can also be used to install the unit that you decide on, ensuring that it meets warranty standards.

A Lennox heat pump can provide a low-cost heating and cooling solution for your home. The pump's installation will allow you to enjoy a comfortable home environment throughout the year, while adding actual value to your home.
