Cheap AC options by Intrepidation on Flickr. With summer heat right around the corner, cheap AC options are probably one of your main concerns. Here are a few options to help you beat the heat this summer.

Whole house fan

If air conditioner prices have you worried about installing a system, you might want to consider a whole house fan. This kind of fan mounts to the ceiling, sucks in the air in the house and then forces that air into the attic where it's pushed out of your home. You'll have to make sure the windows are open as this is one of the AC options that will pull in air from outside.

The constant cycling of air gives the whole house a cooling effect. If you rent and can't install a fan like this, you can use one that fits in a window.

Swamp cooler

Another type of air conditioner is a swamp cooler. These cheap air conditioners can't be used in areas where it's very humid and will only work if the humidity is 60 percent or less. You can actually build these air conditioners yourself. All you'll need is a water reservoir, wicking material and a fan that will blow over the wick.

The biggest problem is the possibility of mold growing on the wicking material, so if you decide to install this air conditioner, you'll need to clean it often.

Window air conditioner

One way many people get a cheap air conditioner is by purchasing a window unit. This allows you to choose from several cheap AC units. The problem with window units is some can be very noisy, which can disturb light sleepers or distract you when turned up to a higher setting.

Others don't operate well during a brownout. If you live in an area where brownouts are common, you could end up with no air conditioning at all.

You'll also need to pay attention to the warranty. Some models offer five-year warranties, but others only offer one for a year.

Cheap AC brands

If you want a full HVAC system, cheap AC brands are available. These brands not only are cheaper than others, but can also save you money over a period of time. It's best to hire a contractor to help you decide exactly what kind of system you'll need.

The contractor will be able to give you an estimate and show you exactly how large a system you'll need for efficient cooling. You'll also be given a warranty on both the work and the unit.
