When shopping for a home security system, you might find that both ADT and FrontPoint have positive reviews. ADT has years of experience in the field, while FrontPoint is a relatively new company. Both ADT and FrontPoint home security prices are reasonable, which means that you need to look beyond cost to make a decision. The two companies offer completely different packages, equipment and services for homeowners.

Installation of each system

adt home security One of the first things you will notice is that ADT uses a landline system, whereas FrontPoint uses a cellular system. If you install a home security alarm from ADT in your home, you must have a wired phone line from a phone company because the system cannot work on a digital phone line or VoIP line.

FrontPoint uses cellular-GSM communication in all of its systems. ADT does offer a cellular option, but you must pay out of pocket for the transition. While this might make FrontPoint popular with some, you should keep in mind that if your city has few cell towers, you might not get the full benefits of the system.

The package from FrontPoint is easy to install, and you can complete the process in just a few minutes. The various devices attach directly to the walls, doors and windows of your home, and the control panel simply plugs into any available outlet. ADT requires professional installation from one of its trained technicians, but the technician will double-check the system before leaving.

With either system, activation occurs once you contact the company after installation is complete. ADT charges about a $25 activation fee, while FrontPoint does not charge an activation fee.

Included components and fees

Each service provider includes different components in their system and charges different fees for products. Here is a breakdown of some of the differences:

    • The FrontPoint package comes with one wireless detector and two wireless sensors. ADT's package includes one wireless detector and two hardwired sensors.
    • FrontPoint gives you a key fob controller, but the company charges an equipment fee of at least $99.95. ADT does not charge an equipment fee if you sign up for a three-year contract.
    • ADT charges on average a $399 installation fee, but the company gives you a mail-in rebate that will drop the installation fee to around $99.

For an additional fee, you can use your security alarm control panel to control your lighting and electrical system. You can even access the system when you are away from home to adjust your lights, change the temperature of your home and lock or unlock your doors.
