A family protected by ADT.ADT, originally known as American District Telegraph, has been in business since 1874. The company later branched into fire and burglar alarms. Following a merger with Broadview, ADT added two additional monitoring centers, bringing their total to seven.

As is the case with many home security companies, ADT offers a two-way communications system that allows you to communicate directly with the ADT monitoring center through the use of a control panel. ADT offers three hardwired home security systems and two wireless home security systems.

Basic ADT security systems feature two window and two door sensors. Additional sensors can be purchased at an extra cost. You can also choose to add on more monitoring services, such as cellular backup, fire and critical conditions.

The cellular backup service allows your home security system to remain connected to the ADT monitoring center even if your landline is not operational.

The cost of the basic ADT security package — the Safewatch QuickConnect Plus Package — is about $300. A monthly monitoring fee of about $43 per month also applies. The system includes:

    • Wireless keychain remote.
    • Motion detector.
    • Two wireless window and door sensors.

Monitronics security systemsMonitronics was first established in 1994 and has its headquarters in Dallas, Texas. Today the company provides hands-free live communication between their customers and their monitoring center. Cellular and landline monitoring services are available through Monitronics.

Monitoring through Monitronics works similar to many other home security companies, including ADT. A signal is automatically sent to the central monitoring station if a sensor is triggered. You are then contacted by a representative at the monitoring center via the two-way communication system and asked to provide a unique password. If the wrong password is provided or the monitoring center is unable to contact you, emergency personnel will be dispatched.

One of the main differences between ADT and Monitronics is that with Monitronics there is no upfront cost. Instead, you lease the equipment as part of a contract. Basic contracts begin at around $32 per month. The basic system includes:

    • Wireless motion detector.
    • Three wireless monitors.
    • Home alarm.

More advanced options are also available, including carbon monoxide detectors, smoke detectors and heat sensors.

Installing a home security system can provide you with great assurance regarding the safety of your home and family. You should study home security system reviews in order to make the most well-informed decision about which company to have installed into your home.
