Ductless split AC by fatihhoca on iStockphoto.A ductless split AC is a method of adding air conditioning to some rooms in your house without the need to install ductwork, which is required for a central home cooling system. It also eliminates the need to install multiple window units. This type of AC system is often used as an alternative to a central air conditioning system.

A ductless split AC system has an outdoor condenser unit and an indoor evaporator unit, as does a central air conditioner. These two units are connected by tubing that contains a refrigerant and electrical wiring that allows the units to communicate with each other.

This type of HVAC system may have more than one evaporator unit, depending on the size of the house. The condenser converts the refrigerant vapor into liquid, which lowers the temperature of the refrigerant and provides the cooling capability.

The evaporator unit includes a fan, cooling coil and controls, and you can also add indoor blowers to this unit. The blowers are mounted near the ceiling on the interior walls of your house. You may be able to control the system with a remote control.

A ductless split AC system with multiple evaporator units allows you to cool different areas of your home independently, as you could with window air conditioners. This cooling method can further increase your energy savings. Current ductless systems are about 60 percent more efficient than units that were made 10 years ago.

The efficiency of a ductless AC is measured by the seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) rating, and a higher SEER rating indicates greater efficiency. The minimum standard for AC units is an SEER of 13, but most modern ductless systems have a higher SEER. Ductless systems may also measure their efficiency with the heating seasonal performance factor (HSPF) while operating in heating mode.

Another sought after feature includes noise levels. A ductless split AC is generally quieter than a window air conditioning system. It is almost inaudible on the low setting.

The cost of a ductless split system is less than that of a central air conditioning system if you only need to cool a few rooms. However, a central AC system will probably be more cost effective if you wish to cool the majority of the house.

You will typically need to spend at least $1,000 to install a ductless split AC system with a single evaporator unit.

An AC system may require replacement rather than repair if your current system is old or will require major repairs in the near future. You may be able to install the system yourself, although you may need to hire a contractor to preserve the warranty.
