Deciding to install a residential alarm is a smart move, especially right now with home security prices at an all-time low. As with any security system, weak or dead batteries can end up spelling trouble for the homeowner. Knowing how to change the battery on your ADT home security system is important.

Nearly all home security system reviews suggest that ADT home security subscribers are diligent about keeping track of when it is time to replace ADT batteries.

adt security systemsADT home security systems are equipped with a battery pack. This pack keeps the alarm system powered up in case you experience a power outage. If you receive a message on your ADT display panel that indicates that you have a low battery, you will need to take steps to get the battery pack changed as soon as possible.

The official recommendation from ADT is to call out an ADT service professional once every four years to change the pack. However, it is possible to do it yourself and save a bit of money on the service call.

Nearly all home improvement centers and stores that sell batteries carry the type of battery pack that is used by your ADT home security system. To ensure that you purchase the correct pack, take your old one out and take it with you to the store to compare types.

While your system may differ slightly, most ADT home security systems have a keypad panel with two tabs on the top. Once you've located these, next:

    • Press these tabs down using a flathead screwdriver.
    • Pull the keypad panel away from its housing. Allow it to hang open as you locate the battery pack inside. This pack will usually resemble four AA-sized batteries, which are wrapped in plastic and rigged to a wire connector.
    • Disconnect the wire connector from the battery pack.

When buying the new pack, be sure that the amperage and voltage of the new pack match the old pack's specifications.

Once you have obtained the appropriate replacement battery pack, reverse the steps above to install the pack properly. Reconnect the wire connector to the battery pack and then replace the keypad panel over the housing, pressing the top tabs back into position.

It may be necessary to replace the batteries in your system more frequently than recommended. This is especially true if you experience frequent power outages that tend to drain the batteries in your system. Otherwise, make note of when you installed your home security alarm, and then be certain to change the batteries at least every four years.
