Using a heat pump air conditioner isn't always the best option since it has a few limitations you should be aware of before you choose to install the device.

Heat pumps from Maytag operate on the same cooling principles as a central air conditioner. Warmth is drawn from the air within the home by the heat pump air conditioning unit, and then is pushed outside via the air ducts located throughout the structure.

When the weather turns colder, the Maytag heat pump draws warmth from the outside air or ground and transfers it into the house through those same ducts, dispersing it to heat up the home.

The heat pump is only capable of making moderate changes in the home's air temperature, however. For homes located where extreme temperatures are the norm, the pump must be accompanied by a furnace to aid in heating or air handlers to help in cooling, creating a more complicated HVAC system than the heat pump alone.

Maytag makes a variety of heat pump models, each rated according to both its seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) and the pump's heating seasonal performance factor.

The SEER for Maytag ranges from a mandated minimum of 13 for models such as the Maytag PPH2SD or the Q6SD to a far more efficient rating of 22 for the premium PSH4bI model.

The HSPF is the efficiency rating of the heat pump while heating. New heat pumps must have an HSPF rating of at least 7.7, a requirement which every Maytag heat pump model meets.

The Maytag PSH4BI has an HSPF rating of 10. The cost for the heat pump will depend on the size of the unit as well as its efficiency. The larger and more efficient the heat pump, the more costly the unit will be.

Because you have several models of Maytag heat pumps to choose from, you should hire a contractor to determine just which model is the right one for your home. A contractor will be able to give you an estimate of the size of heat pump required to sufficiently heat and cool your home, as well as letting you know if you'll need additional HVAC elements, such as a furnace, to complete your system.

The contractor can then install the heat pump itself so that your HVAC system meets warranty and building inspection requirements.

A Maytag heat pump is just one in the wide array of HVAC options a homeowner has for installation. In a moderate climate, heat pumps prove to be extremely cost efficient, offering both heating and cooling without the expense of separate furnace and AC units.
