If you’re looking to add a home automation system as part of your overall home security system, comparing the products and service offered by Verizon and Cox Communications can help you understand your options.

Verizon – an overview

verizon1The first thing you should know is that Verizon does not sell or offer security systems. What they offer are home monitoring packages. These packages let you monitor your home for any potential problems, even from work or while on vacation. You must first buy an installation kit, which is available for less than $100. The company does offer a pre-set/pre-owned kit which they provide free, if you sign up for their monthly monitoring service.  The kit comes with everything you need to install the system in your home.

Once you finish the installation process, you can access your monitoring system through a smart phone, iPod® Touch, computer or FiOS-enabled television. If you opt for television monitoring, you must purchase the plan directly from Verizon for a monthly fee, which can start at $8.99.

Cox Communications overview

cox 2Like a growing number of cable system companies, Cox Communications has recently added home security systems to its growing list of “bundled” services. One thing to remember when considering a cable-based provider of home security systems is that these services are not available outside the cable systems’ service area. Selecting a cable-based home security system also requires you to be one of their subscribers and if you wish to take advantage of their wireless and Internet-based products and services, you will be required to select or add them as your Internet service provider.
